Christian Mayne My favourite album of the last couple of years and has been in my CD player almost permanently. Great musicianship and a simple production that lets the tunes and playing shine through. Great album artwork and sleeve notes too. The CD version is highly recommended. Favorite track: Spike Island Lasses / Pride of Rathmore (Reels).

Andy Sharp Wonderful stuff.

Doireann's fiddle has a rawness to it, that makes this album cut through the excessively 'studio-ified' recordings of late to stand out. Sarah's playing has a similarly natural quality, with a breathiness reminiscent of Cormac Begley.

Doireann and Sarah's rendition of some of the best tunes in the tradition is something rather special to behold. I've not heard Drowsy Maggie sound that good before! Favorite track: Toss the Feathers / Jenny Picking Cockles / Drowsy Maggie (Reels).

Greg this a great concept as a traditional music album with archives. i recommend the CD version.
Irish traditional music lovers will be hooked on that album!!!

This album shines a light on the music and lives of five remarkable early 20th Century Irish Traditional Musicians: Ella Mae O’Dwyer, Nora Hurley, Aggie Whyte, Ellen Galvin and Mollie Myers Murphy.

With the exception of a small number who recorded commercially, female musicians of previous generations tend to be remembered as peripheral figures in the tradition. This isn’t a true reflection of their musicality, instrumental proficiency, or the esteem in which their contemporaries held them.

In the course of this project, we delved into the lives of these women and discovered how they occupied a place at the heart of traditional music communities. Some played in dance halls, at house parties and community events whilst others were céilí band leaders, educators and composers.

As a result of family commitments and the social norms of the day, their music-making was largely confined to the home, a state of affairs which goes some way towards explaining why many never got the recognition they deserved. We want to acknowledge this under-representation and our album strives to preserve their artistic legacy for generations to come.

We’re very grateful to the Arts Council of Ireland who afforded us the opportunity to conduct this research. We have since discovered many more talented and innovative female musicians and unfortunately could not include them all. Musicians such as Kathleen Harrington, Elizabeth Crotty, Kitty Hayes, Eleanor Keane, Lucy Farr and Mrs. Dalton have inspired our own music making but we’ll have to leave them for another day!

The Housekeepers Dublin, Ireland

Sarah Flynn (concertina) and Doireann Glackin (fiddle) are neighbours hailing from the north side of Dublin. As a duet they have performed both nationally and internationally including Expo Milan and Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca Della Musica, Bologna.
In 2018 they were awarded the Deis Recording grant from the Arts Council of Ireland for their research project and album 'The Housekeepers'. ... more

Absolutely love that deep concertina sound. And the range of expression that Cormac brings out through this instrument, well beyond the intentions of the designers or makers of these instruments. And, feel sorry for his poor bellows and reeds. He has to do a lot of personal repair on them. Cormac's album design and presentation are beautiful works of art as well.
